The artistic layout and seasonal beauty of the planting plan is a vital aspect of any garden design.

The art of designing with plants is related to the art of full garden design but has a different emphasis and a different approach. Planting or border design requires design judgement combined with a good level of horticultural, ecological and cultural knowledge. It includes two major systems: formal planting and naturalistic planting.
